Using laptop for internet overseas?
I have a laptop that has NOT been set up for wireless internet yet. Can I take it overseas (I live in California, will be traveling to France and Spain) and have access to internet? Is there anything I will need to do to set it up before I leave? Will I be able to access the internet in Europe if I've never accessed the internet here? Guide me! I am very technology-challenged! If the hotels provide wireless access, what will I need to do to access it through my laptop? Do I need to take anything aside from the laptop itself?

Answer 1 :
You shouldn't have any problems connecting wirelessly. The wireless-g/b/draft-n standards are pretty much global. Be aware, you will have to get an adapter to plug in your laptop. They use a different A/C current there. See my source for an example.
Answer 2 :
Well yea before you leave you can go to some place like BestBuy or a local Computer store and see if they can put a wireless cable in your computer. But it might cost a lil bit of money but its probly worth it. And by the way. Before you buy the lil wireless cable thing I would like call the place where you will be staying and than see if they got wireless internet just to make sure that you don't waste your money. Hope I helped! Bye

That is so way not fair. i WISH life was fair. ~hope this helps~
Answer 2 :
Well Tabbi, its not fair, but you have to realize that life really isn't fair and no one ever said it would be. Parents will play favorites, there is no secret about that and I'm guessing she is the youngest in the family right? Be happy you're getting the gifts you are, millions of kids out there would die for a laptop.
Answer 3 :
This isnt fair, I have a younger sister, she is 4 years younger than me...We have been really lucky with our parents, and we have always had the same amount spent on us every year. Try talking to your parents and ask why this has happened....Hopefully you have a good relationship with your parents and they will be able explain

Portable wireless hotspot
Portable wireless hotspot?
My sister is studying abroad in Spain at a town where there is little wireless internet available unless you go to an internet cafe. I heard someone mention a "stick" that you can rent that gives you wireless internet when you plug it into your laptop. Is anyone familiar with a product like this? Where do you buy/rent one? How much does it cost? What is it called? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer 2 :
Verizon makes one called the MiFi that you carry around, like in your pocket. I have one but it is a little expensive. Verizon also has aircards that plug into a special slot in your laptop.
Answer 3 :
Your sister will be able to get 3G dongle from Telefonica - who are the national telecom operator in Spain http://www.telefonica.es (Spanish( In fact Spain is pretty good with Internet penetration - so there will be plenty of choice available and competitive pricing for it too. Its around 20 Euro (US$25) a month for a decent data package

Maybe you need to install the other languages on your system as well. Do you have the Operating system disk?? Is it Windows XP?? Or vista? If it's vista...can you GET an XP disk??? But first, try the other languages thing I mentioned. Hope that helps a little. Good choice on the Firefox Browser!!!! Way faster than Explorer...plus there are tips to make it perform better too
