It's not essential but could be nice to have. For most people, using a laptop to access the internet is better than using a phone. In the USA there are coffee shops and other business everywhere that offer free wireless internet - but you need your own computer. Internet cafes are much more common in Europe than in the USA and the cafes have computers you can use for a small fee. You can also usually use them for checking the digital photos you might take on the trip. your hotel may have a "Business Center" with Internet-conneced computers you can use for a fee (ask), Finding out if the hotel offers Internet for guests may help you decide. If it doesn't there is little reason to take the laptop. if it does, make sure you know how much it costs, if it's wireless or hard-wire, and where it's available. Some hotels that advertise Internet only offer it in the lobby and not the rooms. Most electronics (like your PSP and almost certainly your laptop) accept any voltage and all you need is a plug adapter. look on the power supply - it will say something like "Input 100v - 240v" if it accepts any voltage. Plug adapters are sold at electronics stores like BestBuy & Radio Shack, and often at luggage shops. Make sure the adapter fits the plugs before leaving home - luggage shops usually only sell adapters to fit 2-prong USA plugs, but your laptop almost certainly has a 3-prong plug. You may also want to get a combination adapter & surge protector. Below is an example, but i got mine at BestBuy: http://studenttravel.about.com/od/techtoys/gr/electricadapter.htm
