If you bought your laptop for dirt cheap from a shady shop it is probably a pirated (illegal) version of Windows. If that is the case, if you call Microsoft they will just tell you to buy Windows. However, if you bought your laptop for a reputable dealer, just give microsoft's customer service a call. Here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295539 Never buy technology from non-reputable dealers. Piracy steals money from developers and it's illegal.

Hi meanmachine, If you purchased Windows 7 from a reputable retailer or Microsoft Partner, then you do have genuine Windows. If this is the case it sounds like you did not activate Windows 7. In order to activate now, you will need to call Microsoft - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18715-activate-windows-7-phone.html If you are unsure if your copy of Windows 7 is genuine, visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/genuine to learn more.
